St James School Ethos and Values Based Education

A school’s ethos is concerned with shared values and standards, which are consistently understood and applied by everyone.  At St James, we provide a bright, welcoming, safe, secure and stimulating environment enabling children to have a bright beginning and grow to be the best that they can be.  We celebrate each child so that they are happy children with a positive sense of well-being.

Values education is not a standalone subject within the curriculum; it is an approach to quality teaching and learning, it aims to raise achievement and encourage children to be self-disciplined as active learners. It underpins all that goes on in our school, from our organisation to the development of good relationships, skills for life and promoting positive attitudes and behaviours. We recognise that the personal development of children – spiritually, morally, socially and culturally plays a significant role in their ability to learn and achieve.

Brambles, our school mascot, is used as a teaching aid to encourage children to adhere to our values, ethos and positive behaviour policy.  He is there as a daily reminder to the children of our high expectations and standards.  He promotes the importance of creativity.  Brambles is helped by a family of bears; our Value Bears.  These characters are introduced to the children during whole school assemblies and are displayed in school.  They all have their own personal value which they share with the children.
